Story

This is a tune that found its way onto a hit T.V. show of the 90's, "Northern Exposure".  Cheryl and I wrote it while we were driving the Pacific Coast Highway in California.  In the far off distance we spotted these figures grazing in an arid landscape of wind blown trees. They looked like "Toy Cows in Africa". -Ed

Story

A tune largely written while sitting on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles.  It was pushing ninety degrees and I'd settled into the five mile an hour inchworm-like traffic movement.  I was thinking about my mom a lot those days because she had just come through some heart surgery and in my day dreams I got these flashes of the great times we had swimming in some of Wisconsin's beautiful lakes.  "No Mama, you can't go" - Ed

Story

"Moments" was our first collaboration.  Cheryl had written this great poem about the nature of time and she was looking for a composer.  I worked on it for a while and then nervously gave her a recording of a solo cello part I had written for it.  She took my bare bones part, went to work, and came up with what I think is a pretty spectacular melody.  The odd meter (7/8 to 8/8) didn't phase her a bit, after all this was a girl who had co-written with the bass player from "Weather Report" - I didn't scare her in the least. - Ed

Story

Leave it to Cheryl to pull these ancient sacred Japanese words together based not on their meaning but on their sound.  She modestly calls it "fun with phonics" but I call it the poetry of sound.  Co-writer Oscar Hidalgo was our bassist for 7 or 8 years in L.A.  He and I studied at USC in Los Angeles together, played basketball, met at the "Pantry" for breakfast and got into, stayed out of, O.K... got into trouble.  A monster player for sure, he wrote the bass line, the chord changes and the cello melody for this graceful piece and Cheryl wrote the counter melody vocal line. - Ed
